Boulder Community Health Expands Maternal Care Services

Boulder Community Health has expanded its maternal care services, adding certified nurse-midwifery options alongside traditional obstetric care and significantly expanding postpartum support services for new parents following delivery.

Maternal care director Sylvie Okonkwo says the expansion responds to growing patient interest in midwifery-led care models, alongside recognition that postpartum support has historically received less attention and resources than prenatal and delivery care within the broader healthcare system. "We'd built a strong prenatal and delivery program," Okonkwo said. "But the weeks and months after birth were where we knew we had real gaps."

Adding Midwifery as a Care Option

The expanded midwifery program gives patients an additional care model option alongside traditional physician-led obstetric care, appealing particularly to patients seeking a more personalized, lower-intervention approach to low-risk pregnancies and deliveries. Certified nurse-midwives work within the hospital's existing clinical structure, with clear protocols for consulting physicians or transferring care if complications arise that require obstetric specialist involvement.

Hospital officials say demand for the midwifery option has grown steadily since its introduction, with many patients specifically citing a desire for more extended appointment times and a more collaborative approach to birth planning as reasons for choosing midwifery-led care.

Closing Gaps in Postpartum Support

The expanded postpartum program includes additional lactation consultation availability, mental health screening integrated directly into postpartum follow-up visits, and a dedicated nurse line for new parents with questions in the weeks following delivery. Okonkwo says this expanded postpartum support directly addresses research showing that postpartum depression and other postpartum complications are frequently under-detected in standard follow-up care schedules.

Hospital officials say early data suggests the expanded postpartum screening has identified cases of postpartum depression that likely would have gone undetected under the previous, more limited follow-up schedule, reinforcing the hospital's decision to invest in more comprehensive postpartum support services.
