Colorado Springs Hospital Opens New Cardiac Care Wing

A major Colorado Springs hospital has opened a new dedicated cardiac care wing, expanding capacity for heart procedures and dedicated post-surgical recovery space as the region's population growth has driven increased demand for cardiac care services.

Cardiac services director Renata Pomeroy says the hospital's previous cardiac care capacity had become strained as the Colorado Springs area's population, including a growing share of older residents, has grown significantly over the past decade. "We were consistently running near capacity in our previous cardiac unit," Pomeroy said. "This wing gives us real room to grow alongside the community."

Expanding Both Procedure and Recovery Capacity

The new wing includes additional catheterization labs for minimally invasive cardiac procedures, along with expanded dedicated recovery rooms designed specifically for cardiac patients, who often require different monitoring and recovery protocols than general surgical patients. Hospital officials say the expanded catheterization lab capacity in particular addresses a bottleneck that had previously caused scheduling delays for non-emergency cardiac procedures.

The wing's design also incorporates private recovery rooms rather than the shared recovery spaces common in older hospital wings, a change hospital officials say reflects both patient preference research and infection control considerations that have become increasingly important in hospital design.

Meeting Growing Regional Cardiac Care Demand

Regional health officials point to the area's aging population and overall population growth as key drivers behind increased cardiac care demand, a trend expected to continue as Colorado Springs remains one of the state's faster-growing metro areas. Hospital officials say the new wing was sized based on demand projections extending a decade into the future, aiming to avoid needing another major expansion in just a few years.

The hospital says the new wing will also support expanded cardiac rehabilitation programs, giving patients recovering from cardiac procedures more comprehensive support during their recovery process beyond just the initial hospital stay.
