Denver Public Schools Pilot AI Tutoring Program

Denver Public Schools has launched a pilot program introducing AI-based tutoring software in a handful of middle schools, aiming to provide personalized academic support for students in math and reading who may not have access to private tutoring outside school.
District officials describe the pilot as a cautious, closely monitored initial step rather than a wholesale technology rollout, citing ongoing questions in education circles about how AI tools should be integrated responsibly into classroom instruction. "We wanted to test this carefully with real classroom data before making any bigger decisions," said district curriculum director Marcus Ellery.
How the Pilot Program Works
The tutoring software adapts practice problems to each student's individual skill level, providing additional practice on concepts a student is struggling with while advancing more quickly through material a student has already mastered. Teachers retain oversight of the tool, reviewing student progress data and adjusting how the software is incorporated into their broader classroom instruction rather than treating it as a standalone replacement for teacher-led instruction.
Participating schools were selected partly based on existing technology infrastructure and partly based on teacher interest in piloting the program, according to district officials, who say teacher buy-in was considered essential to the pilot's success given how much classroom implementation depends on teacher judgment about when and how to use the tool.
Balancing Innovation With Data Privacy Concerns
The pilot has drawn some scrutiny from parent groups concerned about student data privacy, given that the tutoring software collects detailed data on individual student performance and learning patterns. District officials say they negotiated specific data privacy protections with the software vendor before launching the pilot, including restrictions on how student data can be used or shared beyond the tutoring program itself.
District officials say they'll evaluate the pilot's impact on student performance at the end of the school year before deciding whether to expand the program to additional schools, emphasizing that any expansion decision will depend on demonstrated academic benefit rather than technology enthusiasm alone.
