Pueblo Community Health Center Expands Dental Services

Pueblo Community Health Center has expanded its dental services, adding additional dental chairs and providers to address persistent gaps in affordable dental care access for uninsured and underinsured patients in the Pueblo area.

Dental services director Odalys Fernandez says demand for the center's sliding-scale dental services has consistently outpaced capacity, with wait times for routine dental appointments stretching to several months before the expansion. "Dental care gets treated as optional in a lot of healthcare conversations," Fernandez said. "But untreated dental problems become serious medical problems. We were turning away patients who genuinely needed care."

Financing Expanded Dental Care for Underserved Patients

The expansion was funded through a combination of federal community health center grant funding and state oral health initiative grants specifically targeting dental care access gaps in underserved communities. The center's sliding-scale fee structure, based on patient income, remains central to the expanded dental program, ensuring cost remains a manageable barrier rather than an insurmountable one for the center's patient population.

Recruiting additional dental providers willing to work within the community health center's sliding-scale fee structure required competitive compensation packages, according to Fernandez, since dental providers in private practice settings can often earn significantly more than community health center compensation typically offers.

Addressing the Connection Between Oral and Overall Health

Health officials increasingly emphasize the connection between oral health and broader systemic health conditions, including links between untreated dental infections and cardiovascular health complications, a connection Fernandez says has helped build the case for treating dental care expansion as a core health priority rather than a lower-priority add-on service. The center has also integrated dental screening into some of its other primary care service lines, helping identify dental needs among patients who might not otherwise think to seek dental care specifically.

Center officials say they're monitoring wait times closely following the expansion, with plans to pursue additional expansion funding if patient demand continues to outpace even the newly expanded dental service capacity.
