Colin Marsh spent two decades managing luxury resort properties for large hospitality companies before deciding, at 47, to launch his own boutique hotel group. Alpenrose Collection now operates three small properties in Aspen, Telluride, and Steamboat Springs, with a fourth under development.

"I'd spent my whole career executing someone else's vision for what a mountain hotel should be," Marsh said. "I wanted to try building something with my own point of view, even if it meant starting over financially at this stage of my career."

A Different Approach to Mountain Hospitality

Each Alpenrose property is designed around a distinct local identity rather than a standardized brand experience, a deliberate departure from the corporate hospitality approach Marsh spent years executing. He's hired local designers and sourced furnishings from regional craftspeople for each property, an approach that takes longer and costs more than standardized corporate hotel buildouts but that Marsh says differentiates the properties in a crowded luxury travel market.

The properties are deliberately small, ranging from twelve to twenty rooms, allowing for a level of personalized guest service Marsh says would be difficult to replicate at a larger scale. Staff-to-guest ratios run notably higher than at comparable larger resorts, a cost Marsh says is central to the brand's positioning rather than an area for potential cost-cutting.

Funding an Independent Hospitality Venture

Marsh funded the first property largely through personal savings and a loan against his own home, a financial risk he says was necessary since he wanted full creative control rather than diluting ownership with outside investors on the first property. Later properties have included some outside investment from a small group of private investors, though Marsh has retained majority ownership and creative control across the growing portfolio.

He says he's in no rush to scale beyond a handful of properties, citing the operational complexity of maintaining consistent quality across distinct, individually designed hotels as a natural constraint on how quickly the group can reasonably grow.
