Adrian Boone has grown his Denver-based cold-chain logistics company, Summit Cold Transport, from a single refrigerated truck to a fleet of over sixty vehicles serving food producers and grocery distributors across the Mountain West region.

Boone started the company after working for a national logistics firm and noticing what he saw as an underserved gap in regional cold-chain capacity for smaller food producers who didn't generate enough volume to interest the largest national logistics companies. "The big players want the biggest accounts," Boone said. "There's a whole tier of regional food producers who needed reliable cold-chain service and weren't getting much attention."

Building a Business Around an Underserved Niche

Summit Cold Transport's core customer base includes regional dairy producers, craft food manufacturers, and smaller grocery chains that need temperature-controlled transport but operate at a scale below what national logistics companies typically prioritize. Boone says building relationships with these mid-sized producers required a more hands-on, relationship-driven sales approach than larger competitors typically offer.

The company has invested heavily in temperature monitoring technology, giving customers real-time visibility into shipment conditions, a capability Boone says has become a meaningful differentiator as food safety compliance requirements have grown more stringent across the industry.

Regional Expansion Beyond Colorado

While Summit Cold Transport started with a purely Colorado-focused customer base, the company has expanded routes into neighboring states as regional food producers have grown and needed transport services beyond state lines. Boone says this expansion has required careful route planning to maintain efficient utilization of the company's refrigerated fleet across a wider geographic area.

Boone says the company's next major investment will likely be a second distribution hub outside the Denver metro area, aimed at improving delivery times for customers in the western and southern parts of the region the company now serves.
